POSITION TITLE:      STREETS - EQUIPMENT OPERATOR III 

SALARY:                      GRADE 20   $15.58/Hour - $32,413.96/Annually                                      

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

An employee in this class performs work operating heavy motorized equipment in the repair and maintenance of the City’s streets, sidewalks, other City structures, facilities and grounds.  Must be able to operate any and all equipment in the City’s shop and fleet.  This employee is responsible for worksite safety and directing crew members working around equipment.  Typical equipment operated by this employee includes a motor grader, backhoe, loader, tandem dump truck, dump truck, asphalt roller, jet truck, boring equipment and other motorized equipment.  Work includes grading various structures, digging, equipment maintenance, truck driving, resurfacing streets, ditch maintenance and other tasks as assigned.  This employee must exercise some independence, as the employee travels between assigned worksites and completes assigned work at each site.  Good judgment and maturity is expected, as this employee is the senior equipment operator of a crew.  This employee is expected to serve as crew leader in the absence of the assigned crew leader.  Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Street Superintendent.  Work is evaluated for safety of operation and overall appearance of City structures and is checked daily by visual inspection.  Duties will also include snow and debris removal from streets and right-of-ways.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates backhoe, rubber tire loader, track loader, motor grader, tractor, street sweeper and other street maintenance equipment.  Grades and subgrades for pouring of concrete or asphalt; grades greenways, walking tracks, golf paths and parking lots.  Grades ditches and sloping banks.  Informs Supervisor of equipment repair needs.  Performs additional tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General and sufficient knowledge of heavy equipment operation. General and sufficient knowledge of street locations, safety procedures and City policies regarding equipment operation.  Skill in operating a motor grader, backhoe, loader, dump truck and other maintenance equipment.  Ability to communicate with City residents and crew members.  Ability to receive and carry out instructions provided by a Supervisor.  Ability to identify and report to a Supervisor the maintenance needs of various structures, grounds and facilities.  Ability to function as a Supervisor in charge in the absence of the crew leader.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks.  This employee must have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.  Working conditions include inside and outside environmental conditions.  Employee is subject to hazards, including mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors and dusts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Graduation from high school or GED.  Considerable experience in equipment operation and maintenance work is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Class B Driver’s License.
