POSITION TITLE:                 LABORER I, MAINTENANCE & CONSTRUCTION

SALARY:                               GRADE 15    $28,080.00 - $13.50/HOUR                                                                        

FLSA CLASS:     HOURLY (NON-EXEMPT)

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

An employee in this class performs various unskilled work in the Water/Sewer Department. Routine work involves the use of skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction.  The employee is expected to learn and demonstrate proficiency with new skills learned on-the-job within a reasonable time frame.  Normally works under the supervision of a Crew Leader who issues oral work orders and inspects work frequently.  This position requires the employee to be On Call as necessary beyond normal working hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This employee will perform a variety of maintenance tasks.  These will include but may not be limited to unclogging sewer lines, working on a crew installing and repairing water lines, water meters and hydrants.  This employee will dig and brace sewer and water lines and ditches as well as any other duties as required.  Employee must be able to communicate clearly and respectfully with the public.  Employee is expected to perform work safely and in compliance with OSHA regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

This employee must have some experience in performing unskilled maintenance or construction tasks or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  This employee must be willing to learn and cross-train on other jobs within the department as necessary. The employee must have the ability to read and write clearly and neatly.  Must have the ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.  Must have the ability to learn on the job while performing tasks and to apply that knowledge to future tasks as assigned. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds of force constantly.  They must possess the visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate mobile equipment such as a backhoe and dump truck in a safe manner.   Manual dexterity is required for the use of manual and power tools.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

A High School Diploma or GED is required.  Some experience in maintenance work is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires a valid North Carolina Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License.
