POSITION TITLE:                 LABORER I, PARKS AND RECREATION/FACILITIES

SALARY:                               GRADE 15    $24,899.21 - $42,328.63

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Performs semi-skilled manual tasks requiring the use of hand and power tools and motorized equipment.  Performs a variety of tasks including cement finishing, operating pneumatic equipment and performing related construction, maintenance and repair duties.  Some initiative and independent judgment must be used in completing assignments without direct supervision.  Supervision is generally direct and work assignments are received from a supervisor who provides oral instructions as to location and nature of work to be done.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drives truck to transport forms, tools, equipment and related material to different work sites; operates dump truck to haul and spread gravel.  Replaces light bulbs at recreation facilities; operates pneumatic tools such as jackhammer, air spade and tamp in opening and closing ditches.  Performs some carpentry, plumbing and electrical work, including making minor repairs on facilities and equipment, including painting facilities.  Assists in mowing park areas and general maintenance and clean-up of land owned by the department, including litter pick-up in all parks.  Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and experience of operating a tractor; working knowledge of minor cement finishing; some knowledge of the processes employed in park maintenance and construction work; some knowledge of grading and related dirt-moving activities.  Ability to perform more skilled work such as plumbing, painting, electrical and carpentry.  Maintain effective working relationships with other employees.  Ability to repair and maintain mowing equipment, weed eaters, vehicles and other recreation equipment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to physically perform the basic life support functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.  Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical or skilled tasks.  Subject to both environmental conditions inside and outside; subject to extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration and subject to hazards such as electrical current, exposure to chemicals and moving mechanical parts; subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.  Required to function in narrow aisles or passage ways.
