POSITION TITLE: METER READER
SALARY: GRADE 18 $29,400.42 - $14.13/Hour
FLSA CLASS: HOURLY (NON-EXEMPT)
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Reads water meters and makes very minor repairs on meters. Works on an assigned route and performs related recordkeeping. Courtesy is required in frequent and public contacts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates motor vehicle to travel to meter reading area; follows established route and reads water meters; records meter readings on hand-held reader. Performs work in accord with established policies and procedures under general supervision and is evaluated for accuracy and efficiency by review of records prepared by the employee and through analyses of problems and complaints. Observes operation of meters and makes minor adjustments and repairs as needed; clears area around meters. Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable knowledge of the street system and the locations of water meters on assigned routes. Working knowledge of the functioning of water meters. Ability to read meters accurately; walk long distances in all kinds of weather; understand oral and written instructions and work orders; deal courteously with the public; prepare accurate records; and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Graduation from high school.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to physically perform the life support functions of climbing stairs, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, crawling, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must possess the visual acuity to do extensive reading. Subject to outside environmental conditions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a good driving record.
