It is strongly recommended that you contact our department (to verify the need for a permit) before any building, demolition, remodeling or renovations of any type begins.
The department's purpose is to serve the City of Thomasville by protecting the public's health, safety, and general welfare. This protection is provided through the enforcement of the technical codes and the General Statues set forth by the State of North Carolina, as well as, Thomasville's Code of Ordinances. It is our goal to enforce these codes in a professional manner and provide knowledge and understanding to contractors and citizens of Thomasville. In addition, we accept plans for review and issuance of building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits for new construction, additions to existing structures, and alterations to existing structures. The department also issues permits for demolition, storage buildings, signs, and swimming pools.
The office staff works from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and inspectors work from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Please be advised the department is closed from 12:00pm - 1:00pm (daily). If you would like to speak to an inspector, please call or come to our office during the hours of 8-9 AM or 1-2 PM. They are available to answer your questions and lend assistance during those in-office hours.

A building permit can be applied for online (by clicking the underlined link below), but it must have a completed application attached at the end of your request. To add your subcontractor permit request to an existing building permit, please call or email the permit technician (email@example.com), with the scope of your work. Your permit information will then be emailed to you along with steps on how to pay for the permit, request an inspection*, or how to view the inspection results.

Also you can come into our office to obtain your permits, as well as pay by check or cash. If you prefer to pay by credit card, there is access to a computer in our reception area.

Inspections can be scheduled online (through the Building Permit link above), provided the permit has been both paid for and released in our system. You will need to have both your permit number and PIN number, in order to schedule the inspection. *Please be advised leaving a voicemail does NOT guarantee a scheduled inspection.*
All businesses that have a physical location within the city limits of Thomasville are required to register their business. Initially, you will need to complete the business registration application, which is then reviewed by the zoning administrator, building inspector and fire marshal. Renewals of your business registration will be sent out in June of each year. You can pay the renewal fee of $25.00* online, in person, or by mail. * Please be advised that penalties may be charged for payments after the expiration date of your Business Registration. (*please remit this payment separate from your utility payment.)

“(c) No later than October 1 of 2023, 2024, and 2025, every local government shall publish an annual financial report on how it used fees from the prior fiscal year for the support, administration, and implementation of its building code enforcement program as required by G.S. 160D-402(d). This report is in addition to any other financial report required by law.”
